Weather warning in place
A yellow weather advisory for snow and ice is currently in effect for the Northeast and will run until midnight.
It states:
“Erratic rains, sleet and snow are expected to fall on icy surfaces, causing icy patches to form. Also, a more persistent streak of rain and snow from the hills is likely to move south across northern England and North Wales on Friday morning. ”
“This will then gradually move towards parts of central and south-west England and south-east Wales on Friday. While ice is expected to be the most widespread hazard, snow is likely in some places as well. Snow is more likely. fall over Pennines, North York Moors, the Welsh Highlands and perhaps South West England, with 2-5cm possible here.
“Elsewhere, although snowfall is possible, accumulations are likely to be mild and temporary. Patches of icy fog can be an additional hazard with visibility areas of less than 100 m at times.”
What to expect
- Some slip and fall injuries on icy surfaces
- Probably some patches of ice on some untreated roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes
- Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer travel times by road, bus and train
