Areas expected to be governed by the new restrictions include Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Country Durham and Sunderland. The government is ready to announce the changes tomorrow.
The new rule will take effect from Friday, which could force licensed pubs, restaurants and other venues to close after 10 p.m. every day, as a curfew is introduced.
But the hospitality venues will be able to reopen, unlike in Bolton where pubs and restaurants are just take out.
Residents of the areas will also be prohibited from socializing with anyone from a different household.
People will also be asked not to visit nursing homes unless essential, not attend sports venues and Avoid public transport except on essential trips.
The new measures are expected to take effect after midnight on Friday morning in an attempt to curb the dramatic increase in coronavirus cases in the region.
It comes after Health Minister Nadine Dorries met with 22 MPs from North East England today.
Seven local authorities have been urging new restrictions to be introduced as infections start to rise steadily.
Speaking earlier this week, Newcastle City Council Leader Nick Forbes said: “There is universal concern from Council leaders across our region about the exponential increase in Covid cases over the past week.
“Unless we go through with this now, we face a bigger problem down the road that could end in a total lockdown.
“It is better to try to introduce measures that avoid that, although that may mean some additional restrictions in the coming weeks.
“We are working with the government on a plan on what they could mean and how we can implement those measures in the coming weeks to protect our communities and have to enter another lengthy and damaging lockdown.”
