Nicola Sturgeon warns that Glasgow lockdown restrictions are likely to remain

Strict rules prohibiting people from mingling indoors in Glasgow and surrounding areas are likely to be upheld after a search, Nicola Sturgeon said.

People in the region are unable to visit other homes after a sharp increase in infections.

The measures are tougher than in the rest of the country where the new rules imposed as of today limit the meetings to two homes inside and outside.

The rules came in two weeks ago in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire. They were rolled out to Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire last week and are now scheduled for a review.

The NHS Lanarkshire region was added to the list for additional restrictions on Friday night.

Sturgeon, in today’s official government update, said discussions are continuing with local health experts.

He warned: “I don’t want to arouse anyone’s hopes at this point that these kinds of restrictions are about to be lifted in the parts of Glasgow and Greater Clyde to which they apply.

“The case numbers that we have seen in recent days have still been significant. These restrictions may need a little more time to have the desired effect.”

Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Gregor Smith said a meeting was held prior to today’s briefing on the situation.

He said there were signs of a slowdown, but added: “It is still too early to know if these measures are having a full effect.”

It takes up to 14 days to see the full signs of coronavirus, he added.
