The Prime Minister warned Scots that “there is absolutely no room for complacency” as the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases continues to rise.
The Scottish government previously reported that another 714 people tested positive for coronavirus overnight, the highest increase since the start of the pandemic.
A total of 99 people are currently being treated at the hospital after being diagnosed with the dangerous virus and 11 received help in intensive care.
Following the latest figures, Nicola Sturgeon has urged the public to “play their part” in the fight against the killer virus.
She tweeted: “This is our highest daily case count so far. Therefore, it is important to start with a few caveats. We are doing much more testing now than in the spring.
“These figures are affected by university groups. And Test & Protect is working hard and well. However…
“We have absolutely no room for complacency, on the contrary. Cases are increasing in Scotland, as in other countries.
“The number of people hospitalized (99 today) has doubled in recent weeks. And we can only beat Covid again together, we must all do our part …
“So, for now, stay out of the houses of others; adhere to the 6/2 rule outdoors and in closed public places; download the Protect Scotland app; and follow FACTS.
“We will overcome this, but only if we all act to protect ourselves and others. Let’s get on with that. “
Virus outbreaks in student residences in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Fife have contributed to the increase in the number of reported positive cases.
Students from the University of Glasgow Caledonian, the University of Glasgow, the University of St Andrews, the University of Abertay and the University of Aberdeen all tested positive.
Hundreds of other students remain in isolation, while students have been banned from hospitality venues over the weekend to try to stop the spread of the virus.
