Nicola Sturgeon said seven more people died while pleading with Scots to adhere to strict rules about family gatherings.

In the last 24 hours, another 1,297 people have tested positive and hospital admissions are increasing.

Sturgeon insisted the virus is not “out of control” but said “we are at a dangerous point” in the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Polmont Young Offenders Institute near Falkirk was forced to send 16 staff members home for isolation after the officer confirmed they had tested positive.

And a new poll has found that the public considers the handling of the coronavirus by Scottish ministers to be notably better than that of their UK counterparts.

The Survation survey of more than 2,000 Scots, conducted for the independence group Progress Scotland, shows that 67% believe that the Scottish government is competent, while 70% consider that Boris Johnson’s cabinet is not competent.
