Nicola Sturgeon coronavirus update LIVE as the pubs and restaurants of the central belt must remain closed

The pubs and restaurants in Scotland’s central belt should be closed for another week, Nicola Sturgeon announced.

The Prime Minister said that hospitality businesses in five health board areas – Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lothian, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran, and Forth Valley – will now not be able to reopen until Monday 2 November at the earliest.

Under the initial blockage of the circuit breaker announced a fortnight ago, it had been planned that they could reopen from this Monday.

Sturgeon said that while there is “cautious optimism” that the restrictions are working, advisers told Scottish ministers that it would not be safe to lift the measures from Monday.

The Prime Minister said: “The extension allows us to make a smoother transition to the new tiered system that we hope will be introduced on November 2.”

The restriction against gatherings in people’s homes will also continue until November 2.
