Three people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in Scotland in the past 24 hours.

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that 176 new cases have also been identified across the country in the same period.

The total number of positive cases now stands at 21,719 since the start of the pandemic in late March.

Currently, 267 people are being treated in the hospital for the virus and six in intensive care.

The Prime Minister revealed that there were three deaths overnight, bringing the death toll in the hospital to 2,499.

The latest figures come after local lockdown restrictions were extended to cover East Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire on Monday.

The two council areas have joined the people of Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire, who were banned from mingling in each other’s homes last week.

The Prime Minister confirmed the move, which now affects more than a million Scots, in a bid to “stem the tide” of Covid-19 as cases continue to rise.

People in affected council areas cannot mix in each other’s homes. They can meet outdoors as long as strict hygiene and physical distance rules are followed.

Hospitals and nursing homes are limited to essential visits indoors only. Outdoor visits to nursing homes are allowed by three people from up to two homes.

Government officials and councils will meet again in the coming days to see if the restrictions need to be further tightened.
