Nicola Sturgeon has announced the highest number of positive test results for Covid since the start of the pandemic.

A total of 806 people were told yesterday they had contracted the virus, the largest number since the daily results were first published in March.

But the Prime Minister stressed that this large increase included a large number of people who were tested on Friday and Saturday, and added a backlog of results to Monday’s figure.

The total number of confirmed cases nationwide is now 28,604, and no new deaths were recorded yesterday.

The Prime Minister added that a “significant majority” of the cases were in the age group under 40, and most of them under 25.

It occurs when more than 1,200 students remain in isolation on college campuses across the country.

In his daily press conference, Sturgeon said: “Our daily case numbers reflect the test results reported in the previous 24 hours, but the figure for each day reflects the test samples that have actually been run during the previous two past days.

“You will remember me saying that the number of reported cases yesterday seemed lower than expected.

“So today’s 806 total includes a fairly high number of sample results that were taken on Friday and Saturday.”

“That we could have expected to be reported yesterday. So that perhaps partly explains the particularly high number of cases we are seeing today.”

“Of course, we continue to work with the UK government to ensure that response times for test results, which, after a small problem a couple of weeks ago, have improved, remain as fast as they should be. .

“The second point is that, while we are certainly seeing an increase in transmission, and I am in no way underestimating that, we are doing a lot more testing now than we were in the spring.”

Of the new cases; 302 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 180 in Lothians, 91 in Lanarkshire and 54 in Grampian and the remainder is distributed to other health boards.

A total of 123 people are currently being treated in the hospital and 14 in intensive care.
