According to the Mail on Sunday, Glen Burley, executive director of the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust in Warwickshire, told staff that “a coronavirus vaccine should be available this year.”

He added that it is established that NHS personnel will be “prioritized before Christmas.”

In his memo, he wrote: “Our Trust, along with NHS organizations nationwide, have been told to be prepared to begin a vaccination program for Covid-19 staff in early December.

“The latest intelligence states that a coronavirus vaccine should be available this year with prioritized NHS staff before Christmas.

‘VACCINE BEFORE CHRISTMAS’

“The vaccine is expected to be given in two doses, 28 days apart.”

Mr. Burley urged staff to receive the flu shot in late November to qualify for any coronavirus vaccines.

The University of Oxford and pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca are developing the jab and the government has already purchased 100 million doses.

Plans suggest that front-line NHS staff and healthcare workers will take the hit first, followed by people over 80.

David Eltringham, managing director of George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, told the newspaper: “We do not have a set date for delivery of the vaccine, but we are preparing to roll out the vaccine in early December.”

Diane Wake, CEO of the Dudley Group NHS Trust said recently that she “expects” a vaccine to be available in December.

She said at a recent hospital board meeting: “It has not been confirmed yet, but I look forward to offering a Covid-19 vaccine to our staff.”

If the vaccine program begins in December, it could pave the way for Boris Johnson to relax the tough social restrictions that have been in place since March.

The document also reports that the government has introduced new laws that would allow Britain to bypass the EU approval process if a safe vaccine is ready before the end of the post-Brexit transition period on December 31.

A senior government source said: “We have ensured that if a vaccine is shown to be safe and effective, we will not be prevented from implementing it by the need for approval from Brussels.”

LEVEL FOUR?

It comes as new “level four” restrictions closing nonessential restaurants and shops if current rules don’t address the second wave of coronavirus, according to reports.

The government is said to be drawing up new plans to add an additional level of Covid-19 restrictions in England if cases continue to rise.

A decision on the new restrictions could be made next month once ministers have analyzed the effectiveness of the current three-tier system, according to inews.

Other options include a “level three plus” strategy and short-term local circuit breaker locks in an attempt to lower the R rate below one.

Boris Johnson recently said that a total lockdown was not an option because it would seriously affect people’s mental health and finances.

Daily Covid figures for Saturday showed that the daily number of coronavirus deaths in Britain had dropped with 174 people dying, but cases had risen with 23,012 more infections.

New figures showed that a total of 854,010 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the UK.
