A police officer is being treated for severe burns to his arms and legs at the hospital after being attacked in Newquay.

The 51-year-old officer suffered “significant” injuries from the fire after being called in to help bailiffs carry out an eviction on private land.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

The policeman’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

He is said to be conscious, able to speak, and sitting up in bed at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Treliske, where he was taken by air ambulance.

Devon and Cornwall police said officers were called to Trevenson Road around 10.20am after reports of a “man behaving aggressively.”

Chief Superintendent Ian Drummond-Smith said: “It’s been a couple of years since I saw a police officer in Cornwall sustain such significant injuries.”

He praised the officers who “came in great numbers from across the county, very quickly,” saying that “some of their actions certainly saved the life of the injured officer.”

“The wounded officer is an officer from Newquay. He is a well-known and highly respected officer in the city,” he told reporters.

“He’s in a good mood.”

The officer is a married military veteran with children.
