West Ham United 0-2 Newcastle United
- Goals: Callum Wilson (£ 6.5 million), Jeff Hendrick (£ 5.0 million)
- Attend: Hendrick, Miguel Almiron (£ 6 million)
- Cousin: Hendrick x3, Wilson x2, Jamal Lewis (£ 4.5 million) x1
Dream debuts for Callum wilson (£ 6.5 million) and Jeff Hendrick (£ 5.0 million) helped Newcastle to an impressive opening day victory at West Ham.
However, it’s fair to say that seasoned Fantasy Premier League (FPL) observers might not want to board Wilson’s train just yet.
The forward is currently in the top ten in Gameweek 2 transfers, but many more coaches are probably too busy recalling previous episodes of trolling from the former Bournemouth player to launch themselves against a player with a history of scoring streaks and long, sterile spells. .
Although the game as a whole lacked quality, the first half was entertaining enough for one that ended scoreless.
Wilson showed the first signs of danger, grabbing the left back twice Jamal lewis (4.5 million pounds) crosses, but directs a header and then a shot, deflected from the near post.
No Newcastle player created more opportunities than Lewis and his attractive pricing could increase his ownership levels, which currently stand at just 1.6%, once the Magpies have navigated a rocky streak involving Spurs and a visit from Manchester United for the next four Gameweeks.
He certainly impressed on Saturday night, having endured a poor 2019/20 season in which he managed to concede more goals (56) than points (48).
The Hammers ignored those early threats to create their own opportunities, with both Angelo Ogbonna (£ 5.0 million) and Pablo Fornals (£ 6.5m) hit the Newcastle bar before the team’s second-most popular FPL pick, among starters at least, came close to breaking the deadlock.
That man owned 6.2% Tomas Soucek (£ 5.0m), who returned from a quarantine period to lead a header after an excellent Ryan fredericks (£ 4.5 million) cross.
And that, aside from a couple of other misguided attempts, went to Soucek, leaving the (arguably) good-value midfielder with an (undeniably) horrible schedule to come, with the Hammers versus Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Spurs, Manchester City and Liverpool for the next six weeks of the game.
That should deter further investment in David Moyes’s players and owners. Michail antonio (£ 6.5 million and 10.8%) could be forgiven for looking for alternatives early on after a rough start for her man.
The former midfielder was the loneliest of the lone forwards against Newcastle, with Jarrod bowen (£ 6.5m) trying, and frequently failing, to regain ground to provide some support to the front.
And although West Ham managed three shots on goal for the visitors two, one of them came in injury time at the end of a game well and really won by Newcastle by then.
That victory was courtesy of two goals in the second half.
Wilson opened the scoring, and his Newcastle account, when he hit home plate at the near post in a Hendrick movie.
The midfielder sealed the deal at the end of the game with a goal from inside the area after a good job from the substitute. Miguel Almiron (6.0 million pounds sterling).
Wilson, who worked well with Andy Carroll (£ 5.5 million) up front, it looked lively throughout and was close to a second when Javier Manquillo‘s (£ 4.5m) simply bypassed, allowing Lukasz Fabianski (£ 5.0 million) to clear.
The only Fantasy spot on a good day for Magpies was a blank for their most popular asset, 23.2% owned. Allan Saint-Maximin (£ 5.5m), who made only one shot (wide), missed just one snap and created precisely zero chances.
Not that his boss, Steve Bruce, cared. He was too busy singing praises to his new boys and an older one.
The last week has been a positive week for everyone, the impact that the signings have had, the fans in particular will like their appearance. That’s hands down the best I’ve seen from Andy Carroll since the year he returned. He has scored a couple of goals in the preseason and when he plays like that and stays well, we know what kind of competitor he is.
That is unlikely to indicate a stampede for Big Andy to enter our Fantasy teams, but Wilson is an entirely different matter. Yes, and it’s a big yes, you can find some consistency for your new gear, it won’t stay at 6.5 million pounds and 10% for very long.
As for West Ham, Moyes was refreshingly direct about the game.
I didn’t enjoy the performance and I didn’t enjoy the game.
Looking at that wicked upcoming schedule, you may not be enjoying anything for a while yet.
