Newcastle United player ratings: brilliant Saint-Maximin takes man of the match honors

Newcastle United were inspired by Allan Saint-Maximin when they rose to the top six.

The French master conjured the first goal out of nowhere and then pushed Callum Wilson for the second goal after Ashley Westwood tied.

Wilson then added a third from the spot after Nick Pope fouled Ryan Fraser on a night Newcastle helped Steve Bruce publish a response to his critics.

It was much better for the Magpies, who are now in the top six in the Premier League. Here are Lee Ryder’s ratings.

Karl Darlow 8

I had a couple of nervous moments with a greasy ball in the back of a wonderful display at the Spurs, but it was still available to keep the Clarets at bay.

Emil Krafth 7

Forced into the center of defense after Schar’s injury after winger’s turn. He got it right and got half a dozen clearances.

Federico Fernandez 8

It offered some rock solid foundation for the win with 10 slots and a couple of blocks.

Fabian Schar 8

He looked pretty confident and threw some long test balls down the throat of Burnley’s defense. The shoulder injury from the first half was never removed and was replaced in the 52nd minute.

Jamal lewis 8

Looking for a good buy at £ 15 million. He always demanded the ball and can handle tough things.

Jeff Hendrick 6

He didn’t have a great night against his old club and lost a couple of times.

Isaac Hayden 8

A neat and clean display. He went about his business and rarely lost the ball.

Jonjo Shelvey 8

A much improved Tottenham screen. He was always looking to pick his teammates and was unlucky enough to miss out on assists from Wilson and Hendrick. He made 76 touches in total.

Allan Saint-Maximin 9

His breakneck pace and superb tricks put Burnley in a spin. A wonderful knitting run then he shot for the first goal before delivering a second goal for Wilson in a position where he couldn’t miss. Sadly he was forced out with a bang with 20 minutes remaining.

Joelinton 8

Strong and powerful on the ball and United needed him against a tough side of Burnley. Despite his lack of goals, his pace of work and effort cannot be ignored tonight as he operated far behind the two forwards.

Callum Wilson 9

A true poacher. You know how to stay cool even after failing. Great moment of his career for the first blatant penalty. But reality was a thorn in Burnley’s side.

Subs

Javier Manquillo 6 (for Schar 52)

Fitted in four rear without problems.

Ryan Fraser 7 (by Saint-Maximin 72)

He won the penalty and made the attacking play fluid after ASM’s departure.

Sean Longstaff (for Joelinton 90)

* Subs must play 90 minutes.
