Until now, the worst he could hope for after an ill-advised purchase from Redd, the art dealer at Animal Crossing, was a dubious fake that the Blabbers museum would refuse to take it out of his hands. However, New Horizons is seriously increasing the stakes, with works of art that are not only fake, but are also obsessed in some cases, transforming eerily as the sun goes down and possessed by the flickering, smiling, and shifting specters of the damned.
Well that’s fine, it’s probably a bit of a stretch, but there’s definitely something upstairs with the paintings in New Horizons, as some unsuspecting Animal Crossing players are starting to report. And while the cataloging of this haunted art is just beginning, the general theme seems to be that all of the affected items are fakes, and that they all undergo some form of transformation as the day progresses, returning to normal in the morning.

Certain fake versions of Johannes Vermeer’s The Girl with a Pearl Earring, for example, will suddenly close their eyes at dusk, and Tōshūsai Sharaku actor Otani Oniji III as Yakko Edobei adopts a haunting smile. Hishikawa Moronobu’s haunted version of Beauty Looking Back, meanwhile, will turn in the opposite direction as night falls, and worse, examining the back of the painting reveals a stain of the leaking figure .

And it’s not just the paintings either; A video of an ancient fake Dogū statue levitating after sunset when a player interacts with it has appeared, and at least one person has documented that their fake Rosetta Stone glows brightly when darkness falls.

It’s another wonderful, albeit totally unexpected, bit of attention to detail at New Horizons, and judging from the response on the internet, it has transformed Redd’s family parade of fakes from minor annoyances to the season’s collector’s must-have, even if they could suddenly decide to jump off the wall and murder their owners in the middle of the night.
