Neil Lennon is considering a defensive shakeup to combat Celtic’s fixed game weakness

NEIL LENNON is considering changing the way his team defends set plays after seeing his men concede numerous times from corners and free throws in his area.

The Celtic manager believes his team has to brush up on all areas of their defense after sending in 21 goals in their last nine games, earning just two wins in those matches along the way.

However, he recognizes that, in addition to his players taking on greater personal responsibility for defending their goal, he may also have to consider their defensive setup.

“These are the dirty parts of the game that we should do better,” Lennon said.

“The first goal [against Sparta]Chris (Jullien) gets the first contact and we don’t deal with the second phase, which is up to us. That’s something we should have dealt with without a problem.

“The third goal on the fast break, we have enough bodies to deal with it, but we didn’t track the run. They are individual mistakes: disconnecting.

“It all comes from the fact that we are in a very good position in a set piece. Even in the last goal we have recovered enough numbers and perhaps at that moment they have the feeling that the game is slipping away from them.

“We could certainly do better in the transition – individually and collectively and certainly on the set of plays.

“Maybe it has become a problem for them. They just have to be confident and self-confident to deal with it.”

“We didn’t have a problem with him last year, but for some reason he has become a problem this year.”

“We are working very hard [to change it]. I can look at it differently than the way we set up set players on defense in terms of the side of the man who scores things.

“We could change that. We’ll see. It’s something we definitely need to improve on.”
