Neil Lennon insists that accusations that Celtic have abandoned their Champions League ambitions to focus on their historic Ten In A Row attempt are utter nonsense.
The Hoops failed to reach the group stage of the blue band club competition in European football for the third year in a row following a midweek loss to Ferencvaros in the second qualifying round.
But they have continued to dominate nationally with consecutive number seven, eight and nine secured titles during that time as part of an unprecedented potential triple triple.
However, Lennon is convinced that the cutlery at home has not been obtained at the expense of competing with the cream of the continent and a club that is content to be the best in Scotland.
Ahead of today’s visit to Motherwell, where they will be looking to get back on track, Lennon said of that claim: “It’s ridiculous and very exaggerated.
“It has nothing to do with the Ten in a Row scenario. Our goal was to try to make the group stage. We haven’t done it and obviously there will be negative consequences that we have seen many times before.
“It hurts, don’t get me wrong. It is not something I discard. It’s a blow. I want the Champions League for the players and for the club as much as for anyone.
“But we have to park that now and move on. We still have to think about the Europa League and also about the domestic challenges that await us. What you do is reboot, you don’t change a lot of things, and you look forward to the next game.
“It is important that we have another game to come. There will be a lot of publicity and criticism, we are very aware of that. But sometimes it is out of sync and unbalanced with what I see on the field. “
