NASA will reveal an “exciting new discovery” about the Moon on Monday.
The big announcement “contributes to NASA’s efforts to learn about the Moon in support of deep space exploration” and will be made at 4 pm GMT.
A live broadcast of the event will appear on NASA’s website, as well as on its official YouTube channel, which will also appear on this page.
You can follow all the build up and the latest speculation here.

It has been a busy month for the Moon. October began with a full moon and, on very rare occasions, it will also end with one, since this Halloween we are invited to a blue moon.

Speculation online, including in the comment section of this page, has featured jokes that NASA is about to announce that the Moon is made of cheese.
These claims have been around since at least 1546, when the phrase “the moon is made of green cheese” appeared in The proverbs of John Heywood.
However, there is no chance that NASA will reveal that Earth’s satellite is dairy-based today. That announcement was made almost 20 years ago on April Fools Day.

Less than an hour to go until NASA’s big announcement.
Nasa TV is currently showing a video about how difficult it is to launch rockets from Earth due to their enormous gravitational pull. Earlier this month, we were also reminded of another potential obstacle to taking off from Earth: space debris.
There are currently thousands of pieces of space debris orbiting our planet, and if two large pieces collide, as they almost did recently, the consequences could be catastrophic.
A 1978 study by NASA scientist Donald Kessler warned that the domino effect of such an event could create an impenetrable layer of debris that would make ground-based space launches impossible, essentially trapping us on Earth.

For anyone interested, NASA has also announced that tomorrow it will be holding an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit about its findings. Anyone can ask questions at r / space on Tuesday, October 27 at 10 a.m. M. PT / 1 p. M. ET / 5 p. M. GMT.

NASA’s official Moon News Twitter account has shared a picture of Casey Honniball aboard the Sofia. It seems that Dr. Honniball may take center stage in this announcement – yet another confirmation that this is the discovery of water?

Others have noted that NASA’s Moon announcement comes at a time when there are perhaps more pressing issues to address here on Earth.
It comes amid a worsening pandemic, global economic turmoil, and just eight days before the US presidential election. Given all that, maybe it’s really a welcome distraction?

There has been a lot of speculation on social media about what the NASA announcement might be.
Alien life, the discovery of a monolith, or how about a Death Star?
