A mysterious monolith has reportedly appeared in Romania, after a similar structure disappeared from a desert in Utah.

The 4 m (13 ft) monolith has been spotted on Batca Doamnei Hill in the town of Piatra Neamt, according to local media reports.

The appearance of the hollow structure, which is triangular in shape and covered with a looped squiggle, has sparked speculation about its origin.

It bears a resemblance to him Utah monolith which was seen in a remote cove two weeks ago, prompting people to wonder if the monuments are linked.

In a bizarre twist, the Utah Bureau of Land Management said the structure had been removed without their knowledge on November 27.

It had originally been spotted by state wildlife officials who were helping count the bighorn sheep from a helicopter earlier this month.

It is unknown where these monuments come from. Some have guessed it could be the work of a prankster inspired by the science fiction novel 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In Arthur C Clarke’s book, a monolith appears on Earth and gives wisdom to a tribe of apes.
