The former Spurs and England striker says the manager must have some blame for his team’s shortcomings
Former Tottenham and England star Teddy Sheringham says Jose Mourinho has to “take a look at himself” after saying that Spurs players were guilty of being “lazy.”
Mourinho was frustrated following Spurs’ 1-0 loss to Everton to open the Premier League season, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring the only goal of the game.
After the game, Mourinho said the Spurs were “lazy” with their pressure, which allowed Everton to gain a foothold in the game, but Sheringham objected to that, saying the coach must take responsibility for his own role in the failures. of the team.
“The players are not lazy in general. I have had this many times with the England team in the past when the best international teams came to Wembley and passed it on to us, everyone was trying, but the tactics could have been wrong.” said Sheringham, who spoke at Maurice Newman’s charity golf day in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital in Essex.
“If not everyone is on the same wavelength when you push, when you don’t, that’s where you end up. It looks like you’re tired, it seems like you’re lazy, but you’re not, it’s just that the tactic isn’t right, that’s what Tottenham against Everton.
“It’s just the first game of the season, it’s hard to say, as they could play the weekend, get their tactics right and look great. It could easily change.
“But for one game and the way Mourinho talked about his players, he wasn’t too excited about how he distanced himself from the problem.
“You have to be careful not to lose your dressing room, we have seen that you have done it in your last jobs at Chelsea and Manchester United. You have a tough job on your hands.
“You have to look good to yourself about where you are and what you are saying to the press, otherwise it could be the same again.”
Mourinho is in his first full season in charge of Spurs, having replaced Maurizio Pochettino last season after a difficult start to the campaign. The Portuguese coach helped the club to finish sixth in the table, sealing a place in the Europa League.
Spurs faced a scare in the Europa League on Thursday, having to overcome a 1-0 deficit to defeat Lokomotiv Plovdiv on Thursday. They will face Southampton on Sunday before facing Leyton Orient in the Carabao Cup two days later.
