A group of people who gathered in an east London restaurant to play games have been fined.

Police were called to a location on Whitechapel Road, Tower Hamlets, on Tuesday (December 29) to receive reports of the violation of Covid rules.

At the scene, the restaurant owner tried to prevent officers from entering a back room and claimed that the only people present were members of the staff.

But once the police got inside, they found a group of 12 people hiding in a dark room, apparently playing dominoes.

London is subject to Level 4 restrictions and under these rules different households are not allowed to meet indoors.

Despite pleas from the manager who said he was a “reasonable guy” and that all players wore masks, the 12 people caught received Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN).

Officials at the scene told the owner that he was risking his business to get the youth to play dominoes.

The police also recommended the Tower Hamlets City Council to fine the restaurant owners.

Chief Inspector Pete Shaw of Central East BCU said: “The Level 4 rules are in place to keep everyone safe and do not exempt people from gathering to play together in the basements.

“The fact that these people were hiding from the officers clearly shows that they knew they were breaking the rules and have now been fined for their actions.”
