Group Soccer Editor Paddy davitt has registered its marks after the victory of the Canary Islands by 1-0 in the championship of Middlesbrough.

Here’s Paddy’s verdict on the top of the table from Daniel Farke, who found a way to outmaneuver a committed Boro in a trait that is fast becoming a key tenet of this Championship match.

• Tim Krul

Scooped Marvin Johnson’s low shot in the first half. Even when an opponent can beat you from the penalty spot, it doesn’t count. Remarkable. Third consecutive clean sheet. 7

• Max Aarons

Decisive dart and exchange with Przemyslaw Placheta brought the penalty, converted by Teemu Pukki. 7

• Grant Hanley

He frustrated Chuba Akpom in the first period, when Tim Krul miscalculated the flight of a looped ball into his box. Even better near the post block with Britt Assombalonga preparing to shoot from close range. So important now to this Norwich bottom line that he stays in shape. 8

• Ben Gibson

He rescued Krul, who was only able to stop Johnson’s initial attack. A historic reunion with his childhood club seemed to have turned sour when he dropped Marcus Tavernier, who emerged from his blind side in the penalty area. However, fate was with him. 7

• Jacob Sorensen

Neil Warnock was infuriated by escaping a second yellow card for a late body check. The first of an inopportune tackle on Jonny Howson was tough. Between another fixed screen in an unknown position. You better get used to it for how predictable it seems. That said, it is part of a defense that is racking up sheets to zero. 7

• Oliver Skipp

Pleasant appetite for turnover work encapsulated by his burst of kick and steal to stop a Boro counterattack that drew applause from the visiting technical area. Another key intervention before the break to cut a cross at his first post bound for Akpom. 7

• Lukas Rupp

I didn’t enjoy the incessant pressure from Boro’s midfield for the first 45 minutes. Arguably, he had one of the Canaries’ best chances in the first half when he dragged a deflected right shot. Farke later revealed, even though the contest ended, that the hamstring continues to bother the German. A worry. 7

• Emi Buendia

He had Marcus Bettinelli climbing from 20 yards, but his curling iron arched widely. A riveting run tied two Boro defenders in knots, but Marco Stiepermann’s shot was blocked. Centimeters from connecting with Placheta’s low center in the second half. 7

• Marco Stiepermann

Isolated before the break with the central midfield and the City defense at the rear. 6

• Przemyslaw Placheta

Two top box crosses in each half traveling the length of the six-yard box with no catchers. His pace is a useful outlet when City are under pressure. But a careless touch on the edge of his own box contributed to the sequence that earned Boro a penalty. 7

• Jordan Hugill

It is not the homecoming I expected. Little to no serves and a suspected shoulder ligament injury shortened his afternoon break. 6

Substitutes for the city

• Teemu Pukki (for Hugill, 45) 7

In a rich vein of scoring form. A good penalty on the wrong foot marked his sixth in the last nine outings for the club and the country. Dael Fry’s excellent last challenge denied him a chance to try Bettinelli earlier. Paddy McNair deflected another effort at an angle toward the side net.

• Kenny McLean (for Buendia, 81) n / a

• Alex Tettey (for Stiepermann, 90 + 3) n / a

• Christoph Zimmermann (for Placheta, 90 + 3) n / a

• Mario Vrancic (for Sorensen, 90 + 4) n / a
