Mick Schumacher missed the debut of the Grand Prix weekend at Nurburgring after the first practice on Friday did not start due to bad weather.

On a humid and foggy morning in the heart of the Eifel Mountains, conditions were deemed unsuitable for the medical helicopter to fly if it were necessary to travel to the nearest hospital, so the pit lane was not opened.

The session was initially delayed 30 minutes before another half hour was followed by the formal cancellation of the opening weekend session for security reasons.

Practice A session has been canceled due to bad wet and foggy conditions at Nurburgring.

Schumacher, the 21-year-old F2 title leader, was only scheduled to race for Alfa Romeo in Practice One, so the team will now have to reschedule his debut. The same applies to his Ferrari teammate, Callum Ilott, as the Brit was supposed to race Haas instead of Romain Grosjean.

“Alfa Romeo boss Fred Vasseur has told me that if they can’t get out on track with Mick Schumacher here, it will be the weekend as he won’t be racing P2 so they will have to work on a schedule for. the rest of the year, “said Sky F1’s Ted Kravitz.

Nico Rosberg, the 2016 world champion, said: “I’m so heartbroken for Mick and Callum!”

On the difficult conditions on F1’s return to the Nurburgring after a seven-year absence, FIA race director Michael Masi said: “It’s a bit challenging. Obviously, with the fog coming from the medical helicopter you cannot take off and fly to the hospital The road distance is too great in case something happens.

“The region we are in is not much different from Austria at the beginning of the year. The fog has come in and is rising slightly, but then decreasing more dramatically. From the perspective of the FIA, the safety of all Participants leaving is essential and that is not something we would compromise. “

With rain expected throughout the day, attention will now turn to Practice Two and whether conditions improve enough for that session to take place starting at 2 p.m.
