Tributes were paid to Michelle Mullane, the former radio host of the BBC and XFM, who died aged 50 from bowel cancer.
The announcer, who was diagnosed in June 2019 and told she only had six months to live, died on Christmas Eve.
In an Instagram video last week, he revealed that he had been unable to leave the house for the past two months due to experiencing “excruciating pain for almost six weeks straight.”
His close friend, comedian Jason Manford, shared a tribute to the former BBC Radio Manchester host.
He wrote on Instagram: “I have so many good memories of Michelle when I started stand up in the late 90’s. Michelle was the first person to put me on the airwaves and we spent many nights laughing, flirting and joking about beers; in the air and out. We drank millions of cups of tea! “
Manford, 39, added: “Michelle Around Midnight was one of the only shows you could be on, get paid for and be yourself without having to be a big ‘TV name.
“She was a great advocate for up-and-coming talent and gave a lot of us comedians from the north an edge, at a time when it felt like you weren’t in London, you didn’t have a chance.
“She has supported me and many others since then. Many people will miss her very much, not least her little daughter Liv.
“She just texted me the other week to congratulate me on Royal Variety and say how proud she was of me. For over a year we have been trying to organize a benefit concert, postponed due to Covid, in aid of Kidney Cancer UK & Bowel Cancer Research.
“The second we can, I will make sure 100% this happens on your behalf Michelle.”
Mullane, from Alderley Edge in Cheshire, had raised money for the Cancer Research UK charity and wrote a blog, SK9 Cheshire, about her treatment. He had started chemotherapy and a stent was also placed to push the tumor to one side.
Her 23-year-old daughter Liv Winter posted a tribute on Instagram and wrote: “Beautiful mom. My mom taught me a lot, she held my hand in moments of discomfort and pride, she guided me to the end, yelled at the teachers and supported me (although in reality I was just a little shit and they didn’t do anything), an energy … an energy that words don’t do justice to.
“A quick wit and intelligence that gave her an unparalleled quality found only in the rarest stars, her warmth allowed me to trust her with any of my problems … and I mean ANYTHING, even the ones that many people his mom doesn’t count.
“I had a laugh that filled the entire room, it was my biggest support and always made me believe that I could and still can achieve anything. She was my best friend. I can still feel it and always will. “
Announcer Steve Penk tweeted: “I am saddened to learn of the passing of Michelle Mullane. My memory of Michelle during her time at Key 103, will always be her laugh, she was such a sweet girl. X “
