Parts of Devon and Cornwall have seen snow in the last 24 hours and are now being warned of icy conditions as the cold snap continues.

Snow began to fall Thursday night over parts of Dartmoor and eastern Cornwall, leaving parts of the moorlands white, and more snow fell in parts of the region last night.

The snow, along with a marked drop in temperature, has been catching some unsuspecting motorists.

The Met Office warned that icy conditions are likely to persist through at least Tuesday.

Matthew Box, a meteorologist with the Met Office, said: “Overall the more widespread snow has ended, so through Friday night we were able to see some snow on high ground, including the Peak District, Pennines and as late as Saturday. In the morning the mountains of Wales.

“We are going to continue to see rains moving from Scotland over the North Sea and there are going to be some gusts over the Grampians and Highland areas as well.”

Jacqueline Smith stopped to take pictures.

Early rains are forecast in parts of Scotland and south west England, as well as parts of Wales, which are expected to subside as the day progresses.

“It will be a cold day, but there will be some spells of bright sun until Saturday, but the rains will continue to affect many coastal areas where the wind comes from the sea,” he said.

But Saturday night through Sunday is likely to be very cold, with temperatures that could drop to minus 10 ° C (14 ° F) in northern Scotland.

Box said: “Saturday night through Sunday we will see a relatively widespread frost where we will have clearer skies, particularly over parts of England and Wales as well as further north in Scotland.

“We could see temperatures in some of Scotland’s glens approaching minus 9 ° C (15.8 ° F) or minus 10 ° C (14 ° F) on Saturday night, so it could be quite a heavy frost in the local places of Scotland “.
