Paul Merson believes Tottenham will face some problems if they let Chelsea have the ball like they did against Manchester City, given the Blues’ firepower up front.
Two points is the gap between Chelsea and Spurs, who are currently at the top of the Premier League table.
It means the Blues could have a full-time point lead, but that’s certainly easier said than done.
José Mourinho’s men will enter the game with confidence after eight consecutive victories in all competitions, including a 2-0 home win over Manchester City last week.
In that game, the clinical Spurs got the job done with just 33% ball possession.
While it worked, Merson believes Chelsea will have more attacking threats up front that could hurt the Spurs if they follow the same counter-offensive defensive strategy.
“These are the games,” he wrote in his column for Sky Sports.
“If you relax against this Chelsea team and give them 65 percent of the ball, can you keep them out for that long?
“At the moment they have more firepower than Man City.
“This team has goals and races.”
Chelsea must show that they can beat the big teams
Merson argued that the weekend’s battle at Stamford Bridge can “give you six or seven extra points” because of the confidence and momentum you would get from a win.
He even believes that the result could make a difference throughout the season.
He added: “If Chelsea lose then ask if they can win a title by losing to Liverpool and Spurs at home.
“For Chelsea, you don’t just want to become a flat-court bully.
Tottenham can draw this game [will be] a great result for them.
“It’s more important that Chelsea win, and it’s more important that Spurs don’t lose it.”
