Memphis Depay paid tribute to his Dutch teammate Virgil van Dijk after scoring for Lyon on Sunday.
The Liverpool defender will miss at least six months of action due to a serious knee injury sustained in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Everton.
The reckless defiance of Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford forced Van Dijk to retire in just the 11th minute.
Depay, who has played alongside Van Dijk for the Netherlands since 2015, opened the scoring in Lyon’s 4-1 win over Monaco.
And the Manchester United flop turned to the closest camera to reveal a message under his jersey.
It said: “Virgilio, stay strong, my brother.”
Van Dijk has received countless tributes since Liverpool confirmed he had suffered an ACL injury.
Arsenal legend Perry Groves told talkSPORT that Pickford intended to hurt Van Dijk.
Said, “I don’t agree with what [Carlo] Ancelotti said it was a legitimate attempt to play the ball. It was not.
“If you look at Virgil van Dijk, the players know if you had a legitimate attempt to play the ball or if you went for the player first.
“That’s why Van Dijk turned Pickford down, we saw him, he turned him down and said, ‘no, get out of there,’ because you know yourself.
“And if you go for the player, then the consequences are that you are going to hurt the player.
“I think Pickford went for the player first and then the ball was on the periphery.
“He came out feet first, lost sight of the ball, panicked and thought, ‘I’m going to go get the player first and if the ball is close, it’s an advantage.’
