The Duchess of Sussex has been charged with “emotional cruelty” as it was claimed that she faced a complaint of intimidation from one of her closest advisers at Kensington Palace, it was reported.
The complaint reportedly claimed that Meghan “expelled two personal assistants from the home and was undermining the trust of a third staff member,” The Times reported.
A spokesman for the Sussexes said they were the victims of a “calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation.”
Meghan, who alongside Prince Harry will appear in an explosive “revealing interview” on US television with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday, is accused of “totally unacceptable” treatment of her former staff.
The allegations involve two senior officials who claimed to have been intimidated by the Duchess.
Another former employee allegedly claimed that Meghan, 39, had “humiliated” him personally.
According to The Times, the complaint was allegedly filed in October 2018 by Jason Knauf, then the couple’s communications secretary.
Harry is alleged to have personally intervened and “begged Knauf not to go ahead,” a source told the newspaper. A spokesman for the couple said Harry would not interfere in staff matters.
One aide reportedly claimed “more like emotional cruelty and manipulation, which I suppose could also be called harassment.”
Knauf allegedly wrote an email to Simon Case, then Prince William’s private secretary after speaking with Samantha Carruthers, head of human resources.
He reportedly said: “I am very concerned that the Duchess was able to intimidate two police assistants outside the home last year. The X * treatment was totally unacceptable. “
Knauf allegedly added: “The Duchess seems determined to always have someone in her sights. She is bullying Y and seeking to undermine her trust. We have received report after report from people who have witnessed unacceptable behavior towards Y. “
Oprah Winfrey’s interview will be screened on ITV on Monday after she offered less than £ 1 million for the rights.
But a public relations expert warned that the timing, with 99-year-old Prince Philip in the hospital and the risk of upsetting the queen, could negatively affect them.
Mark Borkowski said: “The timing is terrible.
“Harry and Meghan are supposed to be a sensitive, caring and empathetic brand.”

Meghan Markle’s spokesperson said: “The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of harassment and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma.
“She is determined to continue her work generating compassion around the world and will continue to strive to set an example of doing what is right and doing what is good.”
