Mauricio Pochettino will replace Thomas Tuchel as head coach of Paris Saint-Germain in the next few hours, after the German was fired on Thursday, with the club that have been champion seven of the last eight seasons in third place in the Ligue 1.
Pochettino has reached an agreement with PSG to take over as a new manager, with only a few details to be resolved before his appointment is confirmed. The Argentine, who has been out of football since leaving Tottenham in November 2019, is believed to be keen to take over at the Qatari-owned club.
Tuchel has paid the price for a slow start in Ligue 1, where PSG have lost four in their first 17 games and are one point behind leading Lyon and Lille. The 47-year-old is leaving after a 4-0 home win over Strasbourg on Wednesday, with PSG sporting director Leonardo polling Pochettino’s representatives for the first time earlier this week.
In his post-match press conference on Wednesday, Tuchel addressed comments made in an interview with German television channel Sport1. Tuchel was quoted as saying he felt more like “a sports politician than a manager” in his first year at PSG, but insisted the quote was an inaccurate translation of a lighthearted comment.
The former Dortmund manager was appointed head coach of Parc des Princes in June 2018, replacing Unai Emery. Tuchel won two Ligue 1 titles in France, completing a domestic treble last season, and in August this year he led PSG to their first Champions League final, which they lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich.
