Police officer Sergeant Matt Ratana was shot and killed inside a Croydon police station early Friday morning.

Sergeant Matt Ratana, 54, was shot and killed by a suspect who was reportedly known to terrorist cops and had been arrested for carrying ammunition a few minutes earlier.

The handcuffed man managed to pull a pistol out of his pants and shoot the veteran cop to death before shooting himself, causing critical but not yet fatal injuries.

New Zealand-born Sergeant Ratana, who was shot in the chest, was a father and an enthusiastic rugby player and coach, described by his friends as a “leader among men.”

Sergeant Ratana had moved to a safer job in custody as he was nearing retirement.

He was due to retire from police work in a few months and had taken shifts at the Croydon Custody Center.

Pal Neil Donohue, told BBC Breakfast: “He thought it was his safest option to just take him into retirement and nobody expected this to happen, certainly not inside police cells.”
