secondOris Johnson is unlikely to receive a “warm welcome” from the White House if Joe Biden wins the presidential election, the former British ambassador to Washington said.

Lord Darroch said there is still some “resentment and unhappiness” over the comments Johnson made while he was mayor of London and in newspaper columns about the former US president. He also said that Johnson would find it easier to secure a trade deal with Donald Trump in the White House than it would be for Biden.

Speaking at an event at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, he said: “I’m not sure there will be, you know, Biden’s warm and welcoming hug for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as there would be Donald Trump’s for Boris Johnson. Prime Minister.”

In 2016, Johnson wrote a newspaper column saying that the removal of a Churchill bust from Obama’s office was a sign of an “ancestral dislike for the British Empire” and his “part Kenyan” ancestry.

Lord Darroch also warned that a Biden administration would not prioritize a free trade agreement with the UK.

“If Biden wins, life becomes somewhat more normal and NATO gets a boost by having a nicer White House president and international relations become calmer and much more predictable,” he said.

“But I don’t think a free trade agreement with the UK is going to be the top priority for the Joe Biden administration.”
