MATT Hancock has come under fire from a chief nurse who responded to claims that doctors are abusing and overusing EPP on Britain’s first line of coronavirus.

The Health Secretary faced criticism from the Royal College of Nurses (RCN) today after ministers said personal protective equipment should be treated as a “precious resource.”

Mrs. Donna Kinnair said the doctors were not ‘abusing’ the PPE

Hancock said yesterday that there is enough to use if used according to official guidance, but he is taking a “Herculean effort” from the government.

But RCN Secretary General Dame Donna Kinnair replied that no PPE was “a more valuable resource than the life of a health worker, the life of a nurse, the life of a doctor.”

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Dame Donna added: “I am actually offended that we are saying that health workers are abusing or over-using PPE.

Actually, I am offended that we say that health workers are abusing or overusing PPE.

“I think what we know is that we don’t have enough of a regular EPP supply.”

“This is the number one priority that nurses are calling my attention, that they do not have an adequate supply of protective equipment.”

The BMA medical union warned on Friday that EPP supplies in London and Yorkshire are at “dangerously low levels.”

It came after the health secretary announced that 19 NHS heroes died in Britain’s fight against the coronavirus.

Today she paid tribute to the doctors and said an investigation would be launched into each death.

He told BBC Breakfast on Saturday: “My heart goes out to their families, these are people who have taken the front line.

“Work continues to determine if they detected the coronavirus while doing their duty while on the job, or if, like so many other people, they caught it for the rest of their lives. Obviously, it’s quite difficult to solve.”

“What matters is paying tribute to their service.”

The daily death toll in Britain rose by 980 in the past 24 hours to 8,958, making it the largest increase and the deadliest day of its outbreak in Spain.

Bleak figures from the Health Department also reveal that the total number of cases rose to 70,272, compared to 65,077 infections yesterday.
