Tottenham Hotspur have signed defender Matt Doherty from Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee.
The 28-year-old right-back from the Republic of Ireland has signed a four-year deal with Spurs.
Doherty made more than 300 appearances for the Wolves after joining the Irish League team with the Bohemians in 2010.
He becomes Spurs’ third signing of the summer following the arrival of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and goalkeeper Joe Hart.
“I am very proud to join such a great club,” said Doherty.
“[They have] the best stadium in the world and possibly the best training ground in the world.
“Once I knew there was interest, it was a no-brainer for me.
“My time at Wolves was fantastic, I don’t have a bad word to say about the whole club. I feel like coming here will take my game and my career to the next level.”
Doherty played in every Premier League game of the Wolves’ 2018-19 campaign and helped Nuno Espirito Santo’s team finish in seventh place consecutively since promoting the Championship. They reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season, but missed out on European football in the 2020-21 season.
Spurs finished sixth in the top flight last season, ahead of Wolves on goal difference, and reached the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Doherty’s move is also a welcome financial boost for the Bohemians, who had put a 10% sell clause on the deal that led to the Wolves.
On Thursday, the Dublin club missed a cash bonus after losing on penalties to Hungarian Fehervar in the Europa League.
Bohemians COO Daniel Lambert posted on social media Sunday describing the news of the Doherty transfer as “pretty seismic.”
