Former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill admits the Rangers are a genuine threat again, but still hopes his old team will take the title.
Steven Gerrard’s team achieves back-to-back victories at Parkhead on Saturday, the first time since 1995.
With the hosts failing to hit a target, manager Neil Lennon has come under scrutiny from fans and experts alike.
And the man who brought him to Celtic believes the former midfielder has a real fight on his hands.
O’Neill told the Scottish Sun: “The Rangers are getting stronger, having been very weak a couple of years ago while trying to make their way through the leagues. Celtic did it all their way, and now it’s different. .
“The Rangers are pushing them. They were better in the League Cup final last season and they lost.
“For me that was because they hadn’t won in a while, and Celtic could see it.
“But there is a long way to go this season. The Rangers have put pressure on Celtic, and it’s up to them to keep it that way, not to fall asleep like they did last year. “
But despite the progress he’s seen at Ibrox, the former Irish boss still hopes his protégé will take the title.
He said: “When Rodgers left, someone had to come in and carry on, and I don’t think there is anyone else who could have done that other than Lennon.
“I think he can handle any criticism that comes his way, even if it hurts.
“But in general it is part of the territory. He has been able to deal with those things in the past, and I think he will be able to deal with this now.
“Do I think Celtic will win the league? At their strongest point, they are still better than the Rangers, so I think they will. “
