Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that Man Utd may have been “a bit lucky” as VAR played an important role in their 1-0 win over West Brom at Old Trafford.
Referee David Coote overruled his own decision to award the visitors a goalless penalty after VAR official Peter Banks directed him to look at the field review monitor.
Minutes later, the VAR got involved again to order a replay of Bruno Fernandes’ saved penalty shot after he noticed Sam Johnstone had invaded his line to keep him out.
Solskjaer, referencing the last-minute penalty shot similarly disallowed by Aston Villa in their 2-1 home loss to Brighton on Saturday, said BT sport he thought both penalties should have been awarded.
He said: “I looked at the penalty this afternoon at Villa-Brighton, and there is contact between the ball and the man. In my head, it could be a penalty, and there too.
“We may have a little luck, but none of them happen, so maybe the rules are different from how I interpret them.
“Bruno wants [take a retake] – We had the same with David (De Gea) earlier in the season when he is an inch from the line.
“It’s a shame for young Sam (Johnstone), he had a fantastic game again, but today it was difficult to beat him and that was the only way we could do it.”
Solskjaer also defended Manchester United’s lame performance against their last three visitors, just days after most of his side returned from a frenzied international hiatus.
“After the international break, we said it in the locker room afterwards, it’s difficult,” he said. “We haven’t worked together, we’ve waited until this morning to get ready for this game, and that’s never easy when everyone has been out for 10 days.
“I am delighted with the points, we know we can do better, but three points are three points, and we achieved a clean sheet.
“There are going to be ups and downs, inconsistencies, you see it also in some results today. The league is not really settling down; I saw José Mourinho say that a victory moves you up, a loss brings you closer to the bottom. It is very tight, it is very early, so points are more important than performances. “
Bilic: ‘Crucial decisions were against us’
West Brom coach Slaven Bilic was encouraged by the performance of his players, but the Baggies now have not won any of their first nine games and remain within the last three after another narrow loss to a team with Champions League ambitions.
Reacting to missing an opportunity to move on from the scene due to Coote’s VAR decision, he said BT sport: “I am very disappointed with the decision. Throughout the second half, I felt like a ‘little West Brom’, all those crucial decisions were against us.
“I’ve seen it a few times, for me it’s a penalty for Conor Gallagher, it’s a clear penalty. I don’t understand why he canceled it. In the new rules, it’s handball, it’s a bit unfortunate for Darnell (Furlong), but before That was a clear foul on Gallagher.
“We are talking instead of 1-0 for us, 1-0 for them and that makes, especially against Manchester United away, a big difference, crucial, that the game is over.
“We were in the game, we had some chances to score in the first and second half. We needed the goalkeeper, of course, when you play Man Utd away, you need him.
“I told the guys, after the game, we are all very disappointed because we thought we deserved something from the game, we deserved to go to the front in the second half. I told them to stay positive and to keep playing, fighting and training. Like this and we have. a great atmosphere, and then we’re going to win games. “
