Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Daniel James’ confidence is high despite another weak performance from the Manchester United winger.
James was surprisingly called up for the 4-1 win at Newcastle earlier this month and kept his place for the next Premier League game in a draw with Chelsea.
The 22-year-old has started three times this season and has been substituted in all three with United tied or lost. James was replaced by rookie Edinson Cavani against Chelsea.
James has played poorly for most of the calendar year and Leeds United were interested in signing him towards the end of the transfer window. However, Solskjaer is willing to be patient with the Welshman.
“Dan’s confidence is high,” Solskjaer said. “Because it’s starting with the quality of the players he’s on the team with. Today was one of those days where he also played against some good guys, had some moments and we kept working.
“Dan has had a really good impact on the club and we are looking forward to developing it further.”
United are winless in their last five Premier League games at Old Trafford and host RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday before Arsenal’s visit on Sunday.
Southampton and West Ham got deserved draws at the end of last season and Crystal Palace triumphed before Tottenham defeated United 6-1. Their last home win was in the Europa League round of 16 second leg against LASK on 5 August.
“We have tough opponents, that’s true, we have RB Leipzig in the Champions League and then Arsenal, so two other big games,” Solskjaer added. “Difficult games, but we will make sure we are prepared for them.
“Good preparation, as we always do, and let’s see where we get.”
