Bruno Fernandes has made an electrifying impression on Manchester United since moving from Sporting Lisbon in January, and some fans now believe his influence extends to the managerial bench.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team was beaten 3-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, meaning their European destiny will come down to their final group match against RB Leipzig.
But United fans became aware of an incident during the match that left them wondering if Fernandes was instructing Solskjaer on how to handle the team in the second half.
Bruno Fernandes played the full 90 minutes in Manchester United’s 3-1 loss to PSG
Some United fans picked up an exchange between Fernandes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
It happened in the 73rd minute. As PSG passed the ball down the midline, Fernandes can be heard yelling what sounds like ‘Ole’ and then gesturing towards the bench.
The Portuguese midfielder’s attention quickly returned to the field and the pattern of play unfolding in front of him, but in the 74th minute Solskajer signed Paul Pogba in place of Marcus Rashford.
United needed an additional presence in midfield at the time: Fred was sent off for a second yellow infraction in the 70th minute and United were left with 10 men. The Brazilian international was lucky enough to avoid the red in the first half after appearing to head butt Leandro Paredes.
But it was Fernandes’s alleged exchange with Solskjaer that seemed to concern several United supporters on social media the most.
Paul Pogba replaced Marcus Rashford shortly after Fernandes gestured towards Solskjaer, but some United supporters fear the incident spells deeper unrest at the club.
“A little late on this, but I just saw Bruno yell at Ole to make a substitute last night? You really can’t get away with that talk with your Sunday league manager,” wrote one Twitter user.
Another said: ‘I just saw the highlights of MU vs PSG. I can’t believe the fact that Bruno told Ole to make a substitute. Physical Education Teacher! ‘
A United fan said the incident left them fearful that Solskjaer might have lost the dressing room, saying: ‘It makes me a little nervous that Bruno is getting mad at Ole (sic) for not making substitutes, first signs that he may be losing. the dresser.’
United return to action on Wednesday night with a difficult trip to West Ham, which ranks fifth in the Premier League, on Saturday night. It will be the first Premier League matches with the fans returning, as London is at level two after the end of the national lockdown.
United are ninth in the Premier League, but they have a game in hand that, at present, would put them on points with Chelsea, who are in third place, and only two behind the first leaders Tottenham.
