Benjamin Mendy will be the subject of an internal investigation by Manchester City with the club “disappointed” because the defender broke Covid-19 isolation rules. Mendy invited three people from outside his home to a New Year’s Eve party at the 26-year-old’s home.
The Frenchman’s act could enrage Pep Guardiola, as the coach has constantly reiterated a message of safety and consideration regarding the virus.
A city spokesperson said: “The club is aware of a Covid-19 violation on New Years Eve involving Benjamin Mendy and subsequent media outlets reported it.
“While it is understood that elements of this incident have been misinterpreted in the reports and that the player has publicly apologized for his error, the club is disappointed to learn of the violation and will carry out an internal investigation.”
As reported by The Sun, a Mendy spokesperson said: “Benjamin and his partner allowed a chef and two of his partner’s friends to attend their property for a dinner on New Years Eve. Ben agrees that this is a violation of Covid-19 protocols and regrets his actions in this matter. Ben has had a Covid test and is communicating with Manchester City about this. “
On Christmas Day, the club announced that Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker had tested positive for the virus. City’s game in Everton on December 28 was called off a few hours before kickoff due to a Covid outbreak at the club, and City’s training ground was closed.
Then three more players were also ruled out for Sunday’s trip to Chelsea due to positive tests, although the club has not made their identities public.
Mendy’s breach of rules occurred after this, so it is unclear if he is available for Chelsea’s selection despite a negative disease outcome. Guardiola can decide not to choose Mendy for the breach.
