Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte wished Virgil van Dijk the best in his recovery after the Liverpool star was ruled out in the near future with a knee injury.
It was confirmed yesterday that the Reds center-back had suffered damage to the anterior cruciate ligament and would face the possibility of missing an important part of the season.
However, the club is not yet in a position to establish an absence schedule, as he will now undergo surgery, after which his situation will be reassessed.
And Laporte, who missed much of last season with a knee injury, put the rivalry between the two clubs aside to wish the Dutchman well.
“Sorry bro. Best of luck for the speedy recovery, no fun or joy even as rivals,” he wrote on Twitter.
While taking to social media late Sunday night, Van Dijk shared a positive statement as he began his long journey back to action.
He said: “This afternoon I met with a lead consultant to begin the process of planning the finer details of my rehabilitation after yesterday’s incident.
“Now I am fully focused on my recovery and will do my best to be back as quickly as possible.
“Despite the obvious disappointment, I firmly believe the opportunity is hardly ever there and with God’s help I will make sure I can come back better, fitter and stronger than ever.
“In football, as in life, I believe that everything happens for a reason and it is important to try to stay calm, whether you go through the ups or downs.
“With the support of my wife, my children, my family and everyone in Liverpool, I am ready for the challenge that lies ahead.
“I would like to thank everyone for the messages of support, it has meant a great deal to me and my family, and now I will do my best to support my teammates in whatever way I can before the big weeks to come. I take my own recovery day by day. I’ll be back. “
