Liam Delap marked his senior category debut with a goal when defending champions Manchester City beat Bournemouth in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The 17-year-old forward struck out in the first half, clinging to Phil Foden’s big ball before laying a serene shot past the keeper.

Sam Surridge tied for Bournemouth when he found room to sweep home.

But Foden secured the win in the end, stabbing after Riyad Mahrez’s shot hit the post.

The win means City will travel to Burnley of the Premier League in the fourth round.

It was a memorable night for Delap, the son of former Stoke City midfielder Rory.

The forward was one of five teenagers Pep Guardiola started as a starter in a young City that also included two 20-year-olds.

Delap has only been part of the City youth squad since last year after leaving Derby County, but he impressed when he led the line, causing problems with his strength and determined runs, and his goal made him the youngest rookie scorer in the world. City in seven years, since Rony Lopes v Watford in 2013.

But as impressive as Delap was, Foden was even more so with the 20-year-old the standout player of the match as he dictated the game at all times.

Among all Premier League players since the start of last season, only Kevin De Bruyne (eight games) and Mohamed Salah (six) have scored and assisted in the same game more times than Foden in all competitions (four) .

Bournemouth, relegated to the Championship at the end of last season, gave a good account of themselves and perhaps could have taken the lead before Foden struck if Surridge had shot earlier as he went on goal.

But this performance against a team that has won the competition for the last three seasons in a row will give them encouragement as they look to mount a challenge for an immediate return to the top flight.
