Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Kieran Trippier as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes aim at the right-back competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Wan-Bissaka has started all but two of the Red Devils’ games this season, and the 23-year-old is a consistent player for Solskjaer’s team.
But United manager Solskjaer has few other options to cover the defender, with Tim Fosu-Mensah the club’s only other senior right-back.
And the coach is weighing a decision for Atletico Madrid and England ace Trippier, according to The Telegraph.
The publication reports that the Norwegian is likely to wait until the summer to pick Trippier rather than make a move in the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old will enter the final year of his contract with Atlético after the end of this season, so it could be the best time to sign him for a losing price.
Trippier is in his second season with the La Liga giants after joining from Tottenham in a surprise £ 20 million trade last year.
In addition to providing competition and cover for Wan-Bissaka, Trippier would offer Solskjaer a different option on the flanks.
The former Spurs player is more of an offensive winger than Wan-Bissaka, whose one-on-one defense has been impressive this season.
The United man proved his worth when he prevented West Ham from doubling its lead in the first half of Saturday’s Premier League clash at Upton Park.
With his team trailing a goal from Tomas Soucek, Wan-Bissaka made a punt and gave Jarrod Bowen a clear run over goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
But the defender rebounded brilliantly to deny the Hammers’ rapid advance, and it turned out to be a timely intervention as United fought back in the second half to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford. .
The victory saw the Red Devils briefly climb into the top four in the Premier League, although on Sunday they were pushed to fifth place following Leicester’s victory over Sheffield United.
Portuguese right-back Diogo Dalot is also on United’s books, but is currently on loan for a season with Serie A leaders AC Milan.
