Sir Alex Ferguson declared himself ‘proud’ after Manchester United announced a package of measures designed to assist the NHS in the battle against the coronavirus.
United, which has offered its facilities at Old Trafford, has shipped 16 of the club’s ‘Foundation’ vehicles to the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and the NHS Manchester Foundation Trust Charity.
The fleet has received more than 3,500 gifts for NHS personnel, including the unsung heroes of the hospital’s cleaning and backroom staff.
It comes after a first wave of donations made by the Foundation to local hospitals last week, while the vehicles were also put on hold with volunteer drivers available to support NHS messaging operations.
Additionally, Old Trafford has been listed as a possible temporary blood donation center, and the club continues to offer NHS workers to stay in the Hotel Football’s free parking for as long as necessary.
Legendary former United boss Ferguson, who underwent a life-saving operation on the NHS after a brain hemorrhage in 2018, has praised those seeking to help the service and its workers, as well as the club.
“I am delighted that we are now recognizing the importance of our NHS, as I experienced it two years ago after my life was saved.
“The response to this pandemic has been magnificent and I have been proud of the way the club and the British people have come together to help. Well done.”
Current United chief Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added: “The NHS staff and volunteers fighting the virus are putting themselves at risk to keep everyone safe and do a truly amazing job.
“They deserve thanks and praise from everyone for their work and efforts every day.”
The move comes after United donated all of the 30,000 perishables stored in the stadium for use through the summer to staff at food banks, hospitals and other local charities.
The United players will participate in a new club campaign to express their appreciation for the NHS and healthcare workers fighting coronavirus worldwide.
That launches on the club’s media channels on Thursday and comes after club captain Harry Maguire helped coordinate the United players’ response to the #PlayersTogether initiative that launched on Wednesday night.
Maguire said: “On behalf of all the players, our thoughts go out to all those who have been affected by this terrible virus.
“It has been moving to see the nation unite to show their appreciation to the NHS and other critical workers.
“By working together, we will overcome this and hope that we will be stronger.”
