Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed Manchester United’s “inspiring” captain Harry Maguire following a 4-1 win over Premier League rival Newcastle United.

Maguire, who has had a rocky start to the season, scored to help Solskjaer’s side to a landslide victory at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Manchester United fell behind thanks to an own goal by Luke Shaw, but Maguire headed in in the 23rd minute.

Despite dominating since then, United struggled to find the back of the net until the final minutes, when Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford scored.

‘Of course the last result [a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham] done [today] even bigger, ‘said Solskjaer.

‘I thought we showed great resilience and great character to come back. I think we handled that setback very well and were led by a very inspiring captain. ”

On Maguire, Solskjaer added: ‘I thought it was excellent. Score a goal and lead by example.

“He is always a very good character at the venue and I am very happy for him because he has had a difficult couple of weeks since the last game for us.

Meanwhile, Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes praised his team’s performance after they achieved their second Premier League win of the season.

“We played well, we had a really good game, we created chances and I missed a penalty, so the result is fair,” said Fernandes.

“Today was about winning and not about performance, but today we met the two.”

Following their victory over Newcastle, Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League, seven points behind the leaders Everton.
