A man in his 30s was tragically killed in a major accident on the M57 at Prescot.
Emergency services were called to the scene, between junctions 3 and 4 shortly before 3 p.m. Monday.
A Vauxhall Corsa is believed to have crashed in traffic and road closures were quickly established.
Traffic came to a halt when an air ambulance landed on the southbound road to assist paramedics, police and firefighters already on the scene.
But despite the work of the officers and ambulance workers, the Corsa driver died at the scene.
The highway remained closed overnight while an investigation was conducted.

The officers then had to organize the recovery of the vehicle and carry out a cleanup of the area.
In a statement, a Merseyside police spokesman confirmed that the man had died.
The force said: “We are asking for witnesses after a fatal RTC this afternoon, Monday, December 7.
“At around 3pm, emergency services were called to the M57 at Prescot to report a collision involving a Vauxhall Corsa between Junction 4 and Junction 3.

“The driver of the Corsa, a man in his 30s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. He will be formally identified and his relatives will be informed.
“The highway will be closed for a considerable time and detours are being established, so avoid the area.”
Investigations are underway with the Highway Surveillance Unit to establish the circumstances.
