A man has been stabbed to death in south London in a wave of violence that has injured 10 people, police said.
Metropolitan police officers responded to five reports of stabbings in Croydon in less than three hours Friday night.
Paramedics fought to save the man’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His relatives have been informed.
The force said there is no evidence to suggest that all of the stabbings were connected. Officers will patrol the area overnight, and police have been given additional powers to stop and search through Saturday morning.
Two men were left with life-threatening injuries after the incidents, metropolitan police said in a statement, while eight others were also injured.
Police arrested two people following reports of a stabbing shortly after 9 p.m. A man was arrested on suspicion of serious bodily injury and the victim, whose condition is not believed to be life-threatening, was also arrested.
Detective Superintendent Nicky Arrowsmith said: “Sadly, tonight we have seen a series of unnecessary and completely abhorrent violent altercations, including one that has tragically resulted in the loss of life.
Officers will be patrolling throughout the night through the Southern Area Command Unit, with additional resources from the Violent Crimes Task Force and Territorial Support Group deployed to deter and prevent further violence. A section 60 warrant giving police additional powers of arrest and search is in effect in Croydon until 8 a.m. M. From Saturday February 6 “.
He urged anyone with information to come forward as soon as possible.
Arrowsmith added: “Tackling violent crime in London remains the highest priority for everyone in the Metropolitan Police Service. We have dedicated resources working to prevent, deter and address violence in all its forms, day and night, and we are using every available tactics and powers.
“Our officers continue to work around the clock to identify and hunt down criminals, bring them to justice, support victims, take guns off the street, engage and reassure the public and keep our London communities safe.
He said the force “cannot do this alone” and needs to work closely with local communities to address the violence. He called on anyone with information about the crime, including people carrying weapons, to contact the police.
