Tragically killed man in house fire in Netherton

A spokesman for the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Department confirmed today that a group of firefighters found a dead man at the scene.

His relatives have been informed by the Merseyside Police.

An initial investigation into the cause of the fire shows that it was caused by a tragic accident, after a garden fire developed out of control.

The photos taken today on the scene show a single floral tribute left on the pavement outside the property.

Mark Thomas, MFRS Prevention Group Manager, said: “Upon arrival, firefighters found a well-developed fire at the rear of the terraced property.

“The fire had completely engulfed a garden shed and was spreading within the property. The teams were able to quickly control the fire.

“Sadly, it became clear very early in the incident that a man had been involved in the fire. He died of his injuries at the scene.”

He added: “The police and our incident investigation team investigated the cause and the circumstances. Initial investigation indicates that it was a tragic accident after a garden fire developed out of control.

“MFRS prevention staff is planning follow-up activities in the area next week to bring peace of mind to the local community.”

In a statement Wednesday, the fire service said: “MFRS attended an incident on Canterbury Way, Netherton, this afternoon.

“The teams were alerted at 6.04pm and on the scene at 6.10pm. Three fire trucks attended.

“Upon arrival, teams discovered that a property’s kitchen, shed, and garden were well lit.”

They added: “Six firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, tackled the fire using two high pressure hose reels and a main branch.

“The fire was extinguished at 7:30 p.m. and the spread of neighboring properties was verified.”

According to the fire service, an investigation into the fire will be carried out.
