Being a referee or an official of the Premier League has its pros and cons.
For one thing, officials can get a close look at the best players in the world and are paid handsomely for doing so.
But, on the other hand, the pressure on officials to make all the right decisions is immense and every call they make is highly scrutinized.
And another downside to an official’s job is the treatment they receive from the players.
It’s no secret that players treat umpires badly. That was evident again during Tottenham’s game against Man City on Saturday night.
Tottenham took the lead after just five minutes when Heung-min Son ran into Tanguy Ndombele’s direct pass and found a way to get past Ederson.
Man City was frustrated, and Kevin De Bruyne emphasized that point when the microphones caught him lying on an official 15 minutes later.
De Bruyne was standing in a corner, but was furious that a Spurs player was invading.
Then he let out his frustrations at the linesman, yelling, “Look where the damn line is!”
Oh, you must be crazy to be an official.
Sky Sports apologized to viewers moments later for any inappropriate language they may have heard.
“[We] Please apologize if you heard any inappropriate language, “said Sky Sports commentator Bill Leslie, according to the Daily Express.
“If you’re watching without the stadium effects, you probably have a word that you shouldn’t have. I’m sorry.”
However, Gary Neville was sympathetic to De Bruyne and noted that “he was right.”
The Man City players became even more frustrated soon after.
Aymeric Laporte thought he had tied when he cleverly outpointed Hugo Lloris.
But the VAR awarded Gabriel Jesus for having handled the ball in preparation and Mike Dean overruled his decision after consulting with the courtside monitor.
There were no more goals and Tottenham entered the break with a goal up.
De Bruyne was still unhappy and was caught talking to officers once more as both sides made their way to the locker room.
