A driver who chased two robbers on a stolen motorcycle from his home has been jailed for 10 years for killing one of them.
Mihai Dinisoae, a Romanian national, was sentenced Wednesday for the involuntary manslaughter of Josh Molloy, 28, who was thrown off his bicycle and into a streetlight when Dinisoae collided with the motorcycle in his Vauxhall Vectra.
He had previously been acquitted of murder following a trial at the Newcastle Crown Court.
Molloy and his partner, a 29-year-old man, had stolen the motorcycle outside Dinisoae’s home on Baldwin Avenue, Fenham, on May 5, triggering a high-speed chase through Newcastle.
CCTV broadcast by police shows Dinisoae driving the wrong way around roundabouts and ramming the motorcycle with the two men on board.
After taking them both down, he is said to have left them seriously injured on the street.
The 29-year-old was treated at the hospital and survived the incident, but Mr. Molloy died at the scene.
Dinisoae, who was arrested hours after the collision, told police that he carried out the chase but did not cause the incident, claiming that the two thieves had lost control.
He was later acquitted of murder at trial, but admitted to murder.
This, in addition to previously admitting to having caused serious dangerous driving injuries in relation to the injuries sustained by the surviving pilot.
Northumbria Police Detective Inspector Joanne Brooks said there was “no question” that Dinisoae had “lost control of her emotions,” but said she shouldn’t have taken the law into her own hands.
“He made no attempt to alert authorities to the theft and instead tried to go after the two men himself to get his hands on their property,” he said.
“The footage shows how foolish Dinisoae’s actions were that morning and has ultimately led to Josh’s death.”
Northumbria police also posted about the case on their Facebook page, and the post drew strong reactions, including one person who said he wanted to buy a pint from Dinisoae.
Others said vigilante action was expected if the crimes went unpunished.
As a result, the force responded with encouragement to show respect to Mr. Molloy’s grieving family.
