A giant shark tooth presented to Prince George by Sir David Attenborough may be recovered by Malta where it was originally found, according to reports.
the veteran announcer gave the gift to the young royal last Thursday when he visited Kensington Palace to see his last documentary with the Duke of Cambridge.
George was photographed holding the fossilized tooth of an extinct Carcharocles megalodon, one of the most feared predators to swim in the seas.
But Malta’s culture minister, José Herrera, has said he wants to “get the ball rolling” when asked if there were plans to add the artifact to his nation’s heritage collection.
Herrera told the Times of Malta newspaper: “There are some artifacts that are important to Malta’s natural heritage that ended up abroad and deserve to be recovered.
“No wonder we pay close attention to historical and artistic artifacts. However, this is not always the case in our natural history. I am determined to change this attitude.
The giant shark tooth he gave George was found by Sir David during a family vacation in Malta in the late 1960s.
It was embedded in the soft yellow limestone of the island, which was laid during the Miocene period about 23 million years ago.
Carcharocles megalodon is believed to have grown to 15 meters in length, which is about twice the length of the great white shark.
Kensington Palace declined to comment.
