Maguire: Shaw heard wrong talking about penalty with the referee

Harry Maguire has told Manchester United that Luke Shaw misheard a conversation he had with referee Stuart Attwell in which he allegedly said he would not give a penalty because it would cause “a lot of talk”.

United were frustrated as United were denied a penalty on Sunday Premier League goalless draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was found not to have deliberately manipulated the ball when colliding with Mason Greenwood, after a video assistant referee (VAR) control.

16 Conclusions: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester United

Shaw told Sky Sports: “At the time, I saw a handball, I didn’t know if it was Mason or Callum. Go forward. I didn’t even know there was a possible control.

“I don’t know why they stopped [the game] if it wasn’t going to be a pen. The referee even told H (Harry Maguire), I heard him that ‘if I say it’s a pen, then there will be a lot of talk about it’, so I don’t know what happened there.

“H said they were told it was a pen. The VAR told him it was a penalty so I’m not sure what happened.
