A section of the M5 was closed in Gloucestershire after a serious collision involving multiple vehicles.

Police were called around 05:20 BST following reports of a Ford Fiesta leaving the road heading north between Junctions 9 and 11.

Police said that when a truck parked behind the Fiesta to offer assistance, a second truck collided with the first.

Highways England (HE) reported that a vehicle caught fire. Details of the victims were not released.

Both carriageways between junctions 9 and 11 were affected.

Closed northbound

The incident occurred on a stretch of highway near Tewkesbury and Gloucester.

HE said the southbound lanes between Junctions 9 and 11 had been reopened “with a closure of lane three beyond the scene.” She asked drivers to “approach carefully.”

He added that the northbound lanes were expected to remain closed until “at least 6 am” Monday.

He said the road surface had been “badly damaged and needs to be repaved.”
