Lyle Taylor salvaged a point for Nottingham Forest with his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw with Derby but Phillip Cocu accused the linesman of stealing the victory.
Taylor peeked home from close range in the 64th minute to cancel Martyn Waghorn’s brilliant opener in the first half. The Rams had enjoyed the best of the first-half opportunities and deservedly took the lead when Waghorn scored with a 25-yard free throw at the half-hour mark.
Derby thought they had won it late when Kamil Jozwiak had a goal disallowed for offside. “I’m not happy, because they have stolen a victory from us, that is very clear,” said Cocu.
“I don’t like talking about the referees but they force me to do it. His goal was a carbon copy of our second goal, one was a goal and the other was not. Someone jumps on the ball from a corner and someone jumps on the ball and doesn’t block the goalkeeper’s view, so that’s the frustration.
“The opposition bench and no player protested, everyone saw it as a goal. The band judge raised his flag and stole our victory. Many things are not in our favor. I am the first to say that we had to step up after the first three games, and we have started to play well and show the attitude we expect from our team.
Forest is undefeated in three games with Chris Hughton, but the new coach felt his team had not done enough to win the game after its slow start.
“We started slow against a Derby team that played 5-4-1 and broke down well,” he said. “They have good players who can receive the ball and do it well. We didn’t break them down well enough in the first half.
“Have two points been lost? We didn’t do well enough in the first half to deserve the win. Lyle Taylor is still catching up, he hasn’t played many games. I’m happy for him and for having scored his goal. We will need it up to date. I would like to think that we are building a base here to move the team forward.
Waghorn put the Rams ahead with a magnificent 25-yard free throw that came over the crossbar in the half hour. Graeme Shinnie should have doubled the lead when he shot straight at the goalkeeper after Nathan Byrne played it seven minutes later.
The spirited Ryan Yates headed straight for David Marshall from the center of Nicholas Ioannou at the edge of the break as Forest struggled for ideas.
Marshall flipped an Anthony Knockaert cross behind as Sammy Ameobi prepared to jump, but Forest leveled from the resulting corner as Taylor hit home plate from inside the six-yard box.
Jozwiak had a goal disallowed by the linesman after Waghorn swerved into an offside position with 13 minutes to go. Lee Buchanan had a deflected shot from behind with five minutes to go as Derby pushed for a late winner.
